MEDIS EL LTD. is developing highly advanced proprietary technologies to satisfy the worldwide demand for cleaner and more efficient energy. The Company was established in 1992 to enter a joint venture with Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) - Israel''s largest aerospace company that developed many of its most advanced aerospace and military technologies - in order to exploit new technologies for civilian application. MEDIS EL is applying the accumulated knowledge of leading Russian-Israeli scientists and cutting-edge technology developed for military use to create its breakthrough proprietary products.
The Company is currently developing highly advanced proprietary technologies in a number of key areas of market demand:
* Greater and longer-lasting power through proprietary fuel cell technology for portable electronic devices.
* Improved cell based medical diagnostics and research systems.
The fuel cell is an electro-chemical device that converts the chemical energy of a fuel, such as hydrogen, ethanol or methanol, into electrical energy. There are different types of fuel cells being developed for commercial applications, many of which are intended for large-scale applications such as automobiles and stationary power generation. By contrast, MEDIS’ fuel cells are being developed for small scale applications, and in particular for use in portable electronic devices.
The current focus of MEDIS'' efforts and funding is on the advanced development, manufacturing, marketing and distribution of its fuel cell products - the disposable Power Pack for the consumer (personal and professional) market and the refuelable military Power Pack. MEDIS'' disposable Power Pack is a portable auxiliary power source that operates and charges portable electronic devices, such as cell phones (including the most advanced “3G” cell phones with a full range of functionality), digital cameras, PDAs, MP3 players, hand-held video games and other devices with similar power requirements.
MEDIS’ Desktop CellScan is a state of the art cytometer that can repeatedly and continuously monitor the fluorescence intensity and polarization by using fluorescence probes within individual, non-adherent living cells. This unique capability substantially extends the range and surpasses the capabilities of other cytometric measuring devices.
The heart of the CellScan is a unique, patented CellCarrier that contains up to 10,000 wells, each of which accommodates a single cell. It is this CellCarrier that enables the continuous monitoring and handling of individual cells, including their computerized isolation.
The CellScan has been used in a number of studies to develop new tools to diagnose diseases such as breast cancers, tuberculosis and lupus and in the development of a test allowing in vitro chemo-sensitivity/resistance testing for specific tumors.
The Desktop CellScan performs dual functions simultaneously. It monitors and analyzes individual multicolored stained living cells in real time, while applying computer-controlled laser beams of light. This capacity to precisely measure the optical parameters of individual living cells greatly facilitates kinetic analyses of heterogeneous cell populations. This feature is particularly useful for investigating physiological, clinical and diagnostic aspects of cells.
