Overview :
MEKOROT WATER COMPANY LTD. is the national water company with annual sales of US $500 million, equity of more than US $670 million, and an annual balance sheet of about US $2 billion.
MEKOROT supplies 1.3 million cu.m. of water per year, which accounts for 90% of Israel’s drinking water and 70% of all the water supply in the country. The company’s experience, know-how and advanced solutions enable Israel to successfully confront the water shortage, resulting from years of drought and its location on the desert fringe on the one hand, and the rapid rise in consumption, on the other.
The company operates 3,000 installations throughout the country for water supply, water quality, infrastructure, sewage purification, desalination, rain enhancement, etc.
MEKOROT’s water supply system comprises more than 800 pumping stations, over 1,200 wells (the pump setting of some is as deep as 400 meters), more than 2,400 pumps, over 10,500 km. of large-diameter pipes, 750 concrete and steel reservoirs, 90 large earth reservoirs and related equipment.
MEKOROT consumes about 6% of the electrical power consumption in Israel through energy-efficient, automated and remote-controlled systems.
The National Water Carrier is MEKOROT’s crowning achievement. The total amount of water supplied by the National Water Carrier since its establishment 40 years ago is 12.4 billion cu.m. It carries water from the north of the country to the center and south, its total pumping capacity is 72,000 cu.m./hour, and the total lift is approximately 400 meters.
MEKOROT has been developing an additional water source by desalinating water of various qualities, while constantly increasing the process efficiency. MEKOROT has pioneered the effective implementation of reverse osmosis technology for water supply in Israel. There are 29 desalination plants, mainly in the south of the country.
MEKOROT’s operations constantly aim at improving the level of the reclaimed water, thereby broadening its applications as an alternative water source. MEKOROT is responsible for treating 32% of the wastewater in Israel (160 million cu.m./year out of a total of 500 million cu.m./year) in 9 plants of varying sizes. MEKOROT reclaims about 68% of Israel’s reused effluents for agriculture (190 out of 280 million cu.m./year), among which is the Dan Region project - the largest of its type in the world.
MEKOROT pays special heed to water quality control and invests extensive effort and means in order to ensure reliability of water quality and supply, through its central and regional laboratories. MEKOROT’s laboratories perform over 200,000 different analyses of 40,000 water samples per year. The company’s central laboratory is graded among the top 3% of laboratories, in the International Water Quality laboratories scale. Over US $100 million are invested in a filtration plant for water pumped from the Sea of Galilee, to meet more rigorous Ministry of Health standards.
The operation of MEKOROT’s 1,700 installations is based on sophisticated, computerized remote-controlled systems, that ascertain reliability and high quality of water supply. The company’s complex monitoring systems generate savings in manpower, energy and water losses. The computer system forms an integral part of daily management.
Electro-Mechanical Services Ltd. (E.M.S.) - A fully-owned subsidiary of MEKOROT, E.M.S. plans and implements mechanical and electrical projects in order to develop the country’s water infrastructures. E.M.S. conducts MEKOROT’s innovative cloud- seeding program, which augments rainfall by some 15%.
WaTech - Entrepreneurship Center for Water Technologies - For the first time, a national water company enables entrepreneurs to participate in water research and development projects. MEKOROT will provide professional platforms, definitions and characterization of needs for new solutions, local and worldwide marketing capabilities, as well as financial solutions.
