Innovation workshop held in Bangalore to launch new cooperation program supporting technological R&D cooperation between companies based in Israel and the State of Karnataka, India

May 7, 2013 – Bangalore, India – Mr. Menahem Kanafi, Consul General of the State of Israel, and Mr. I S N Prasad, IAS, Principal Secretary to Government, Department of Information Technology, Biotechnology and Science & Technology, Govt. of Karnataka, in Bangalore, today announced the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for cooperation in the field of industrial & technological R&D between the Indian State of Karnataka and the State of Israel. The agreement is expected to significantly expand business, technology, and economic relations between Israel and the State of Karnataka - the IT hub of India - while enabling millions of dollars of financial support to cooperative R&D projects in the years to come.

“It is significant that Israel's first cooperation agreement with an Indian State is here in Karnataka. This is a pioneering achievement and a tangible step in stimulating collaboration in areas of mutual benefit and especially elite technologies in which Israel and India both excel,” said Mr. Kanafi.

“A prospective entrepreneur depending on the interest and suitability can seize the opportunity to develop highly innovative and significant commercial potential in the global market, besides societal benefits for the regions” said Mr. I S N Prasad.

The bilateral agreement will be implemented by the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) and the Karnataka Science and Technology Promotion Society (KSTePS), autonomous organizations under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Karnataka; and MATIMOP – the Israeli Industry Center for R&D, on behalf of the Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS) in Israel. The main objective of this agreement is to facilitate and promote bilateral industrial R & D activities and in particular joint industrial R&D projects between entities from Karnataka State and from the State of Israel with an overall goal to demonstrate the technological contribution of the participants from both sides.

Through the program, industries may seek support through partner matching and funding for joint bilateral research and development (R&D) projects, involving at least one small/medium scale company of Karnataka and one Israeli company.

“With the collaboration between companies supported and monitored by MATIMOP and KSCST and KSTePS, we hope to connect the innovation in Israel with that in Karnataka, from an industrial perspective," said Mr. Avi Luvton, Executive Director for the Asia Pacific Department at MATIMOP.

The announcement was made at an innovation workshop held jointly by Department of Science and Technology, Government of Karnataka and MATIMOP today at Bangalore. More than 175 representatives of small/medium scale industries as well as R&D institutions/organisations across the State of Karnataka participated in the event, which featured addresses by representatives from MATIMOP and the Government of Karnataka and its innovation agencies. The delegates attending the workshop were invited to come forward to synergise the intellectual assets of both the entities in the areas of mutual interest for overall benefits of all the stakeholders.
