2001 when ESC Medical Systems and Coherent Medical Group joined
forces. Separately, ESC and Coherent Medical Group were both
leaders and pioneers in the application of light to
life-enhancing aesthetic and medical procedures. Together as
LUMENIS, they offer the widest range of products, an unparalleled
product support system for their medical clientele, and, at $25
million, the largest investment for research and development in
its industry.
The combined strengths and technologies of Coherent Medical Group
and ESC create a company with a strategic advantage.
ESC, founded in 1991, introduced Intense Pulsed Light - IPL
technology for medical and aesthetic treatments. ESC's early
systems used IPL technology to treat vascular and pigmented
lesions on the face and legs - a technique that was quickly
adopted by physicians around the world. In 1998, ESC acquired
Laser Industries, with its well-known Sharplan brand name, a
strong force in medical lasers since 1973.
Coherent Medical Group, founded in 1966, has a rich heritage of
excellence in engineering and its lasers are considered the
"gold-standards" for both medical and aesthetic applications.
Coherent Medical Group also designed and built the first laser
systems for ophthalmology.
Together as LUMENIS, Coherent Medical Group, ESC and Sharplan
have more than 60,000 medical systems installed in doctors'
offices, clinics and operating rooms in more than 75 countries
around the globe. In addition, LUMENIS now holds more than 200
patents worldwide, with another 100 currently pending.
LUMENIS' Opus 20, a unique laser system first developed by ESC,
uses both CO2 and Erbium lasers for a variety of dental
procedures, including painless drilling that requires little or
no anesthesia. AcuBlade is a new robotic laser surgery device
developed by ESC for such procedures as vocal chord surgery.
Other new products include GyneLase, which treats excessive
menstrual bleeding, and AccuVet for the veterinary laser market.
Coherent Medical Group has recently developed a number of new,
innovative medical products including the Selecta 7000 Glaucoma
Laser System for treating open angle glaucoma, a progressive
degenerative disease affecting more than 50 million people
worldwide, and the Opal Photoactivator using Photodynamic Therapy
[PDT] for treating age-related macular degeneration, the leading
cause of blindness in adults over age 50. Other new laser
applications include the VersaPulse PowerSuite holmium laser for
surgical treatment of kidney stones and benign prostatic
hyperplasia.
LUMENIS intends to grow its market-leading position by increased
penetration of existing markets, expansion of existing
applications into new market segments, introduction of new
applications and acquisition of appropriate technologies and
other opportunistic acquisitions. LUMENIS' unique tax structure
allows it to make acquisitions that add to earnings before taking
into account any synergies or cost savings.
On October, 2006 an investor group has acquired 75% of Lumenis
Ltd. The group, comprises Harel Beit-On, Aharon and Shlomo
Dovrat, Avi Zeevi and Ofer Brothers subsidiary Ofer Hi Tech Ltd.,
run by chairman Udi Angel and CEO Yoav Doppelt.
