Core business

Development of a skin blood flowmeter (SBF) to diagnose and to
assist in the prognosis of skin viability.

Employees:  3

Overview

The Company has been established in 1996 at the Initiative
Center of the Negev, a Technological Incubator, to develop a Skin
Blood Flow (SBF) meter.

BACKGROUND: The problem of non-invasive real-time evaluation of
SBF in various areas of the body surface has not yet been
successfully resolved. The importance of this problem focuses on
at least two points: (i) The viability of damaged skin is highly
dependent upon skin microvascular perfusion (skin blood flow,
SBF), and the information of SBF can determine a strategy of the
treatment (surgical or non-surgical) in patients with burns, skin
grafts, and skin ulcers (pressure ulcers, chronic cutaneous
ulcers); (ii) changes in SBF commonly accompany alterations in
peripheral hemodynamics, therefore, data of SBF can be useful for
diagnosis and prognosis of peripheral vascular disorders, for
monitoring a peripheral hemodynamics under narcosis, and for
evaluation of the effects of vasoactive drugs in patients with
severe hemodynamic disturbances (traumatic shock, hypovolemia,
hypotension).

PRODUCT: The skin blood flowmeter (SBF) in development will
serve to diagnose and to assist in the prognosis of skin
viability (burnt skin, skin grafts, decubitus, skin trophic
disorders, peripheral vascular disease), impotence, adaptive
capacity under extreme conditions (thermal or physical load,
hyper/hypogravity and etc.) as well as in the monitoring of
peripheral blood flow under narcosis (especially, during
extracorporal circulation).

Specifications:
Measurement range: 0-100 ml/min per 100g tissue
Accuracy: less than 2%.
Response time: under 3 sec.
Supply: 220V AC through adapter (12V, 0.3A) or internal battery.
Technological complexity: 7 integrated circuits.
Dimensions: 70 x 70 x 180 mm3.

Future technical developments of the SBF will include:
1. A SBF adapted for the measurement of blood flow in various
organs (bowel, liver, kidney, etc.) during surgical procedures;
2. A portable autonomous device for multi-point longitudinal
measurement, data acquisition and analysis, based on a single
chip microcontroller;
3. A SBF modified for thermopuncture diagnostics and treatment,
with feedback.

ADVANTAGES: The SBF provides a non-invasive, direct and
quantitative monitoring of the skin blood flow in real time. It
is a portable, user-friendly electronic device, and is relatively
cheap. Its unique miniature probe provides compensation of
parameters affecting the measurement of skin blood flow such as
skin pigmentation and mobility. The SBF may be calibrated by the
manufacturer; no additional correction is required.
The only other existing SBFs are the Laser Doppler flowmeters,
which are expensive and require a number of additional
adjustments. The patient must be immobile during measurements
with the existing flowmeters.
