University was founded in 1968 by the late Professor Zipora
Alterman. Its original name was the Department of Environmental
Sciences which was changed to the present name in 1975 in order
to more accurately describe its activities.
The Department of Geophysics and Planetary Sciences investigates
the structure and properties of the earth and its atmosphere as
well as the solar system and its planets.
The members of Department involved in the different educational
and R&D activities connected with the studying physical processes
in the solid Earth, atmosphere and hydrosphere. The special
place in these investigations occupies development and
application of new methods for studying solid Earth for aim of
its investigation and environment protection. Among these methods
we could mention the new interpretation methods developed in
seismics, gravity, magnetic, thermal and some electromagnetic
fields for studying complex geological media (revealing faults,
karsts, underground cavities, slide-rocks, hidden geological
objects, etc.). These activities are conducting with the close
cooperation with the industrial, commercial and government
organizations.
R&D technology:
Near-surface geophysics: application in industry and environment
