AMIT TECHNOLOGY SCIENCE & MEDICINE developed the Scalp Cooling
System II, which helps to prevent hair loss during chemotherapy
treatment.
The device functions on the principle of scalp cooling using new
technology, which causes contractions of the blood vessels. As a
result of the contractions of the blood vessels, the quantity of
chemotherapy material which reaches the hair follicles is
reduced.
The scalp area reaches a temperature of 10ø Celsius. As a result
of this, there is a significant decrease in metabolic activity in
the hair follicle area. This phenomenon prevents hair loss in
patients receiving chemotherapy.
The way the treatment is given:
Half an hour prior to dosage of the chemotherapy drug, the cap is
put on and kept on during the entire duration of the treatment,
and for about an hour after the dosage of the chemotherapy drug
is received.
The treatment is not accompanied by pain and patients may listen
to music during treatment while wearing the cap.
The SCS II System is already used in a number of hospitals and
has prevented hair loss in a high percentage of patients treated
by several chemotherapy drugs which cause hair loss.
The success of the SCS II System for prevention of hair loss
depends on a number of factors that vary from patient to patient
and they are: the kind of drug, the concentration of the drug,
the way the drug is applied, the duration of the application of
the drug, and others.
Each patient is unique and the side effects vary from person to
person.
