The Company developed a proprietary implantable device - the
Ex-PRESS, for the treatment of glaucoma by reducing the
intraocular pressure.
The conventional glaucoma treatment plan moves along a path that
begins with medical treatment, namely pharmaceuticals of various
kinds. Pharmaceuticals are effective in only 30% of the patients
over a prolonged period. In the remaining 70%, the conservative
treatment eventually fails with potentially detrimental effects.
In the long run, the laser procedure appears to be failing in
most Caucasians and at best provides results as good as those
achieved in the medical treatment.
This situation leaves the glaucoma market with unserved needs for
which Optonol's Ex-PRESS implant provides an optimal solution
that is a better alternative both medically and economically. The
procedure is minimally invasive, simple, and rapid. The clinical
results show the implant to be safe and efficacious.
