ARO's invention and is exclusively devoted to the management of
ARO's business affairs.
KIDUM deals with all aspects of technology transfer and , in
addition, initiates and coordinates the industry sponsored
research and services carried out in ARO's laboratories. These
include:
** Contract research
** Joint R&D projects
** Multi disciplinary R&D investigations
** Research and licensing of proprietary know-how
** Evaluation and feasibility studies
** Laboratory and field testing.
Some proprietary R&D developments that Kidum has currently on
offer for licensing:
Aquaculture
* Large-scale cultivation of free-living nematodes as a feed for
fish and crustacean larvae for the aquaculture industry. The
nutritional value of the nematode product will be controllable
and nematodes loaded with nutritional or therapeutic agents - to
improve their value as fish food - will be available. The
nematode products are expected to be no more expensive, and
probably will be cheaper, than the currently used Artemia
products, which are increasing in price.
Agricultural equipment
* A fully automatic feeding system for transplanting tray-grown
seedlings of field crops and vegetables, as an attachment to
commercial transplanters. The new system accepts standard-sized
trays such as are used in commercial greenhouses.
* A new system for optimizing irrigation regimes of orchard and
field` crops. Using a heat pulse method for determining the sap
flow, this system measures the actual water uptake by plants,
permitting the exact amount of irrigation water to be calculated.
* A machine that trims the roots and stem of harvested garlic,
and removes the outer peel. The machine on offer - to the best of
the researchers' knowledge - is the only available equipment for
automatically "topping and tailing" garlic in preparation for
marketing, a task that is currently carried out manually.
Animal biotechnology
* A unique technique for producing transgenic animals, by
integrating foreign DNA into the sperm genome before
fertilization, that is both cheaper and significantly more
effective than the currently used methods. Transgenic chickens
resistant to Infectious Bursal Disease have already been
produced, demonstrating the new technology to be commercially
viable. Transgenic cows resistant to Foot and Mouth Disease are
under development.
