responsible for the generation and the exploitations of
commercial opportunities for novel developments and inventions
emanating from the Weizmann Institute of Science.
Within the framework of the Weizmann Institute's five faculties -
Biology,Biophysics-Biochemistry, Chemistry, Mathematical Sciences
and Physics the Institute gathers together 2,500 scientists,
technicians and research students. Research topics span the areas
of immunology, cancer, virology, neurobiology, cell biology,
plant genetics, membranes, biochemistry, structural and organic
chemistry, chemical physics, lasers, electronic and electro-
optics, mathematics and computers, materials and interfaces,
environmental sciences, solar energy and more.
YEDA (Hebrew for "know-how") serves as an intermediary between
the Institute and commercial entities, interested in licensing-in
the intellectual property developed at the Weizmann Institute.
YEDA operates by identifying and assessing research projects with
commercial potential, patenting inventions and protecting various
aspects of the intellectual property of the Institute,
attracting funding for such projects from companies, and
licensing out inventions and technologies to industry.
Since its establishment, YEDA has concluded numerous contracts
with various investors. Examples of products and processes
transferred to industry: Interferon-b, both native and
genetically engineered; COP-1, a synthetic copolymer for
treatment of multiple sclerosis; novel vitamin D derivatives;
bovine growth hormone; Hepatitis B vaccine; Fine chemicals,
research and diagnostics reagents; Improved crop varieties and
new hybrids cultivars; flame retardant materials; data security
products, and computer-related technologies.
YEDA has participated in the establishment of a large number of
companies to directly exploit Institute discoveries, some of the
prominent ones being InterPharm Laboratories Ltd., today a
subsidiary of Serono N.V., XTL Ltd, NDS Ltd, Proneuron
Biotechnologies, and Portman, Pharmaceuticals Inc., now part of
Peptor Inc.
YEDA has a large portfolio of diverse research projects presented
at Yeda's website, for which it seeks industrial partners.
Potential licensees are offered a wide spectrum of patents in
various fields of applications.
