Dynamic Memory Fixator, an ingenious external fixator that
significantly improves the repair of long bone fractures. The
device was invented and developed by Prof. Charles B. Howard of
Hadassah University Hospital and now is being finalized with SMS
Medical Technology. It has several significant advantages
compared to currently available long bone fracture treatments:
* Greatly reduced healing time. In contrast to current fixators,
the SMS Fixator follows the biological order of bone repair with
callus, significantly enhanced bone union leading to greatly
reduced healing time and cost.
* Easy to apply. The SMS Fixator has none of the separate jigs or
guides that current fixators have, making it easier to apply
during minor surgery, with much less risk of trauma or infection.
* Competitively priced fixator. The SMS Fixator is a relatively
simple and a very inexpensive device to produce in comparison to
other fixators in today's market.
* Rapid return to normal functioning. The SMS Fixator allows for
immediate weight bearing on the fractured limb and rapid
independence, which reduces the need for treatment and
rehabilitation.
* Reduces need for physiotherapy. The SMS Fixator significantly
reduces the need for prolonged, expensive physiotherapy.
* Less risk of device maladjustment. The SMS Fixator's
self-adjusting "memory spring device" controls the site's
compression and stability, which dramatically improves healing.
* Easy conversion to "hybrid". The SMS Fixator requires no extra
rings and connectors to convert it to a hybrid version where the
tension level can be easily checked and reapplied.
* Capable of replacing both nails and fixators. The SMS Fixator
has the potential to replace both the currently popular
intramedullary nails, as well as other external fixators, due to
its rapid improved bone union and the reduced risk of infection.
The SMS Dynamic Memory Fixator has the potential to capture a
major share of the current and future trauma products global
market.
