R&D activities, of ATOX BIO Inc., a privately held US company,
registered in Delaware.
ATOX BIO is biotechnology company committed to treatment of
diseases mediated by excessive T cell response by a novel
superantigen (sAg) antagonist and immunomodulator technologies.
The aim of the technology is treatment of infectious diseases
such as toxic shock (caused by bioweapons), Gram-positive septic
shock and new approach for treatment of autoimmune diseases.
These applications answer strong unmet medical needs.
ATOX BIO has developed a powerful antagonist of superantigen
(sAg) toxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus
pyogenes bacteria, which comprise well over 40 structurally
divergent toxins. This diversity, a complex medical problem, has
led to the development of a broad-spectrum sAg antagonist. sAgs
are toxins, which are potent activators of T-cells and act as
potent immunostimulatory proteins. As such, sAgs can have acute
effects on the immune system, causing toxic shock or
Gram-positive septic shock.
The uniqueness of ATOX BIO's approach is its focus on halting the
"toxicity cascade" before the activation of T-cells occurs.
SAg antagonists act as immunomodulators by modulating the nature
of the immune response and blocking an exaggerated Th1 response
even in the absence of sAgs. These immunomodulators are product
candidates for the treatment of autoimmune diseases caused by
chronic overproduction of Th1 cytokines, for example in
rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and psoriasis.
Research funding of over US $6.5 million has been provided by the
US Army and the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency
(DARPA).
ATOX BIO is developing its product for biodefense in
collaboration with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel,
under a current award of US $5.6 million from the US National
Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the
National Institutes of Health (NIH). ATOX BIO holds the exclusive
license for the Intellectual Property of this product and its
technology.
