Overview

MeDilator is a startup company graduated from the Yozmot HaEmek
Technological Incubator, with research and development funding
from the Office of the Chief Scientist of the Israel Ministry of
Industry and Trade.

MeDilator aims to provide a safe, accurate and minimally invasive
method of dilation by developing an innovative disposable
inflatable catheter for use in dilating various body cavities and
specifically, the female cervix. The MD-12 device promises to
dramatically improve existing technology, while enabling safe and
rapid dilation of the cervix as a cost-effective pre-procedure to
intrauterine surgeries. Currently in the United States a total of
approximately 2.5 million surgical procedures require cervical
dilation. The most common procedures include termination of
pregnancy (up to the 20th week of gestation), completion of
abortion, diagnostic curettage and operative hysteroscopy.
Gynecologists in hospitals, outpatient settings and private
clinics, all use cervical dilation products.

There are two techniques currently in use for dilation of the
cervix, laminaria and Hegar rods. The laminaria (seaweed)
technique involves insertion of a dry rod into the cervix.
Contact with body fluids causes the laminaria to swell ensuing
dilatation of the cervical canal. The laminaria method requires
two patient visits and takes a minimum of 10-12 hours for
sufficient dilation to occur. The second, and by far more
prevalent technique, involves the use of a series of solid,
rod-shaped instruments of graduated diameter.

These are inserted into the cervix in serial fashion, from low to
high diameter, until adequate dilation occurs. The use of rods
for mechanical dilatation of the cervix requires general or
regional anesthesia.
MD-12 brings innovation to the cervical dilation market by
offering a safe and non-invasive alternative based on proven
balloon technology.
