technology center in 1991. It's mission was to develop control
systems integrating hardware and software for the company's
automated systems. The core staff included highly experienced,
professional engineers committed to market-driven innovation.
Operations in Israel also contributed to APPLIED MATERIALS'
global operations with the development of Computer Based Training
(CBT) programs, designed to assist users in learning the
structure, operation and process programming of APPLIED
MATERIALS' equipment.
In January 1997, APPLIED MATERIALS formed the Process,
Diagnostics & Control (PDC) Business Group, incorporating the
advanced inspection and metrology capabilities of two acquired
Israel based companies: Orbot Instruments, a supplier of wafer
and reticle inspection systems, and Opal Technologies, a supplier
of SEM based metrology systems. The two companies were integrated
into APPLIED MATERIALS including their manufacturing facilities
and research and development centers.
APPLIED MATERIALS Process Diagnostics and Control (PDC) Business
Group brings constant technological innovation to the global
semiconductor industry. PDC develops and manufactures inspection
tools and solutions that integrate a wide variety of cutting-edge
technologies designed for the world's leading microchip
manufacturers.
PDC employees a staff of around 1,000 and has centers in Rehovot,
Yokneam, Kiryat Gat and Migdal Haemek. The PDC team includes over
400 leading scientists and engineers, specializing in fields such
