method of cell separation from peripheral blood. This innovative
method incorporates strong magnets and metals, which direct the
magnetic flux lines forming a closed magnetic circuit and
maximizing the magnetic potential. Three separate areas of
magnets create virtual magnetic fields, which attract the
magnetic colloids that mark the desired cell population. These
desired cells are held in stasis while the specimen flows through
silicon tubing and undergoes separation. A physiological fluid
is added to the procedure so that the desired cells are not
subject to aridity. The system includes a man-machine-interface,
which allows parameter definition, such as, the intensity of the
magnetic field, system capacity, separation time and more. The
system uses easily assembled disposable tubing, for specimen
transfer, which is changed for each new specimen undergoing
separation.InnovaTech's advanced capabilities create various
market opportunities as its technology can be applied in
different medical processes. For instance, this method will
allow improved stem cell isolation from peripheral blood,
assuring a purer transplant to cancer patients. CEP is also
capable of separating the various stem cell populations for
umbilical cord blood, a process that is currently not done due to
lack of capable technologies. Future applications include the
isolation of fetal nucleated red blood cells by performing a
simple blood test on the mother during the beginning of the
pregnancy. The results are equivalent to performing
amniocentesis. This test will eliminate the need for this
potentially harmful procedure.
