air bubbles in medical systems where blood or fluids are rapidly
or continually infused to the patient body.
Air bubbles injected into human body during medical treatments
where blood or fluids are rapidly or continually infused to the
patient body, such as hemodialysis and open-heart surgeries,
cause damage to essential organs such as the lung and brain. More
than 30% of hemodialysis patients suffer from the fatal condition
of pulmonary hypertension. Approximately 35% of open-heart
surgery patients suffer from long term brain damage. These
problems are associated with the injection of air bubbles during
the procedures.
Utilizing the Company's core proprietary technology, based on
ultrasound technologies, the Company develops a non-invasive,
simple-to-use, patented solution composed of a medical electronic
system and a disposable module - "BubbleBuster".
THERASONICS' new device is expected to reduce the incidence of
pulmonary disorders due to chronic micro bubble embolization
introduced during dialysis treatments.
Targeted Drug Delivery is another exciting application of the new
technology, which enhances the effectiveness of various drugs,
genes, and chemotherapeutics in target sites, by physically,
selectively, and non-invasively arresting and concentrating
encapsulated drugs in the affected area or tumor.
Although every procedure of fluid injection is a potential
market, the Company strategy is to initially sell its products to
the dialysis market, followed shortly after by the open-heart
surgery market.
The Company plans to initially sell its products to the several
market leaders of the fields. Offering the use of the
BubbleBuster will help the medical treatment providers to boost
their profits by providing their patients with longer life at
relatively low additional cost.
