24KV/2500A new fast Fault Current Limiting Circuit Breaker
(FCL-CB) commissioned by the Israel Electric Company. The first
prototype will enable to replace old 50MVA transformers by new
75MVA ones. The system's upper limits are 35KV/3000A for fault
current up to 40KA. The limiting time is less than 1msec.
The FCL-CB will automatically self test the grid 0.3sec after the
first disconnection to determine a final open or closed position
according to the grid short circuit status. This system offers
unprecedented protection for power systems, for expensive
strategic equipment and for electrical networks.
The innovation enable to eliminate actual grid protection
elements consuming power permanently and to save up to 2-3% of
the energy transferred via distribution power lines. Each 1% of
energy saving represent an ROI of less than a year and prevention
of green-house gas emissions of thousands of tons per a year
associated to each replaced transformer mentioned above.
