particular weight management problems and their complications,
based on proprietary proteins DiaLean's founders have discovered.
Cachexia is a progressive wasting syndrome involving involuntary
loss of fat and lean (muscle protein) body mass and is frequently
accompanied by anorexia (reduced appetite). It occurs in more
than 50% of cancer patients and patients with chronic or
end-staged disease such as infections, AIDS, congestive heart
failure, cystic fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's
disease. Cachexia has a large impact on morbidity and mortality
of patients.
Another severe weight management problem is obesity. The
prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing worldwide at
an alarming rate in both developing and developed countries.
Overweight and obesity are the underlying causes for the
metabolic syndrome which is defined, in addition to central
obesity, by Atherogenic dyslipidemia (blood fat disorders -
mainly high triglycerides and low HDL cholesterol that foster
plaque buildups in artery walls), Raised blood pressure, Insulin
resistance or glucose intolerance, and proinflammatory state.
Both weight-management problems are so severe that the FDA
fast-track approval process would be applied for these weight
management
indications.
Focusing on a growing market of obesity/metabolic syndrome which
is currently estimated at US $20 billion, and the market of
cachexia which is currently estimated at over US $2 billion,
DiaLean is developing novel variants of known proteins that have
already been verified in extensive pre-clinical and early stage
clinical studies. In this way DiaLean avoids most of the basic
research stage and starts with process development toward a
treatment for these weight-management problems.
