company developing a novel therapeutic for acne based upon a
well-known active ingredient.
The pathogenesis of acne vulgaris is caused by the interplay of
the four factors responsible for the development of an acne
lesion.
* Follicular epidermal hyperproliferation.
* Excess sebum production.
* The presence and activity of Propionibacterium acnes.
* Inflammation.
The current topical therapeutics target three of the four
pathogenic factors associated with acne, leaving the primary
factor unresolved. At present, there is no topical therapy
directly affecting sebum production and thus, treatment of oily
skin and seborrhea remains an unmet need.
A successful proof-of-concept trial in humans assessed the
potential of Lovastatin as an anti-acne drug. In a double-blind
clinical study, Prof. Sarah Brenner (Head of Dermatology
Department, Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center) demonstrated the
effectiveness and safety of Lovastatin as a topical treatment for
acne vulgaris, with no apparent side effects.
The mechanism of action of statins in sebaceous glands is
well-known.
LOVADERM LTD. is currently seeking partnerships and strategic
collaborations in order to develop the product. These
collaborations will open up the possibility for both parties to
finance development with bi-national funds.
