technology that allows the use of multi-doze preservative-free
formulation of currently used eye drops, incorporated in a
user-friendly delivery system.
The company was born out of the need to improve the way all eye
diseases are treated with topical medication, i.e. eye drops.
Managing the delivery of an eye drop from a bottle or a dropper
on to the ocular surface is not simple to anyone, but especially
difficult for the elderly and children who are the main users.
Additionally, only a fraction of the amount delivered in a drop
is in fact needed, the rest being spilled out to the cheek at the
best, or promptly absorbed into the blood stream via the
nasoŞlacrimal duct, with the subsequent systemic side effects -
at worst. Finally, chronic use of eye drops carries the burden of
toxic effects, as a result of the preservatives used in most of
the currently used ophthalmic compounds.
The introduction of a simple, easy to use, novel container to
provide one solution to all the above-mentioned problems was the
basis for the foundation of AOPHARMA.
AOPHARMA's first product is an ingenious method for delivering
eye drops via proprietary, one-way self-cleaning, gas-propelled
container, through an enclosed space in front of the eye.
AOPHARMA is also engaged in developing new diagnostic and
therapeutic approaches that will improve the accuracy of
diagnosing certain eye conditions, potentially offering a more
effective use of medications for eye care.
AOPHARMA is considering partnerships with various pharmaceutical
companies interested in the use of its proprietary platform for
reformulating their brand compounds.
