New California-Israel Agreement to Support R&D

Agreement Aims at Advancing Industrial R&D Between the State of California And Israel. Chief Scientist: "It's an ongoing vote of confidence in Israeli knowhow"

June 25th, 2014 – :  As previously reported in the "Digital Journal," Israel’s Chief Scientist in the Ministry of Economy, Avi Hasson, the Head of the Economic and Trade Mission to the West Coast at the Israeli Ministry of Economy, Gili Ovadia, and Mr. David Siegal the Consul General of Israel in Los Angeles  joined State of California Governor's Office of Business Development Director Kish Rajan in signing an industrial R&D collaboration agreement this week. According to the agreement, which will be carried out by MATIMOP - the executive agency of the Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS) – along with the relevant bodies in the U.S., companies from Israel and California will enjoy financial assistance for joint R&D projects in a variety of fields.

“We are extremely pleased by this ongoing vote of confidence in Israel’s economy, industry and innovation - which have become an international brand - from a large number of U.S. states and companies,” said Chief Scientist Hasson. “Collaboration agreements like the one with California will contribute to the Israeli economy, job creation, advancing R&D, entrepreneurialism, technology, and more.”

The agreement, initiated by the Chief Scientist and the Head of the Economic and Trade Mission to the West Coast, is modeled on similar agreements between Israel and a number of U.S. states. It aims at advancing research collaboration between companies from Israel and California, and will also provide a suitable ecosystem for this type of activity.

As a direct result of the new agreement, a request for proposals will be issued in the coming weeks inviting companies from Israel and California to submit joint bids for R&D projects - which can then enjoy U.S.-Israeli funding.

According to the Israeli Foreign Trade Administration, California is one of the key target states for Israeli companies active in the U.S.

“This agreement is the result of years of effort by California to earmark resources for this endeavor,” said Ovadia. “It is also the product of extensive activity in the commercial arena between Israel and California, as promoted by the Economic and Trade Mission to the West Coast, and the direct continuation of the strategic agreement signed between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and California Governor Jerry Brown in March.”

The agreement was signed at the Bio Conference in San Diego. An Israeli delegation consisting of 17 Israel biomed companies is taking part in the Israeli pavilion at the conference. They were chosen by the Office of the Chief Scientist, MATIMOP, the Israel Advanced Technologies Industries (IATI), and the Israel Foreign Trade Administration. Israel’s Head of the Economic and Trade Mission to the West Coast is holding an event   at the conference for some 200 leading representatives from the U.S. biomed and investment industries, providing top-level exposure for the Israeli companies.
